Learning to paint is an evolution. The discipline of painting has taught me to look longer, study carefully, and rethink continually. Schooled in science as well as art, I am curious about everything. I try something new in every painting. This experimentation is often disastrous but always eye opening. I make many more starts than finishes. I paint in a range of styles from surreal and illustrative to semi-impressionistic. I use techniques from pointillism to scumbling (scrubbing on paint so that the underpainting shows through). No medium is used because I prefer the directness of pure paint. Most of the time I use brushes with the occasional touch of a finger or knife. Illustrating books for children has made an impact on the narrative in my work. What is left out is as important as what is put in. It is the questions I like to leave in and allow the viewer to interact.
