Paula G. Waterman has been drawing all her life and started exhibiting her work professionally in 1981. She has since become known nationally for her work in black and white scratchboards but is gaining recognition for her oil painting as well, a medium she started working with in recent years. Her approach ranges from portrait-like animals to landscape with or without incidental wildlife. A particular interest in wading birds, dogs, horses and the large game animals helps to guide her subject choices, though rarely all in the same painting! A common thread in all her work in both media would probably be the critical importance of light source and light color. In fact, she feels that light is her actual subject in all her work.
Paula is a member of the Society of Animal Artists and of the American Society of Marine Artists. She has participated in both Societies' juried members' shows. She has also exhibited in Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum's Birds in Art Exhibit several times in both media. She has had work shown in the Mystic International Annual Exhibit. A scratchboard of hers depicting a Great Horned Owl is included in The Atlas of North American Birds - Owls, published by Jeffrey Whiting in 1997.
Paula does her own reference photography and prepares for her artworks with studies and sketches. She lives in Maryland where she gathers much of her reference material. In addition to numerous shows and exhibitions each year, Paula has published a number of prints from her scratchboards and watercolors. Her work can be found in many private and corporate collections.
