Lou Messa

Acrylic

As a young budding artist, Lou Messa was awarded a scholarship to The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, his talent and skills continued as he was drafted into the Vietnam war and trained as an illustrator for the Army.  Years later he became a professional artist and continued his love of painting in the hills of central Virginia.  Working in acrylic and watercolor, Lou renders his subject with great precision and detail.  His country landscape scenes showcase the beauty of the landscape while his Americana scenes portray vintage cars or aircraft. His steady eye and hand and skilled color sense combine to capture the minute details of a stone wall, a barn in snow, or the atmosphere of an autumn wood.  Lou Messa's fine art is well loved, and its miniature size makes it suitable for any home.

Raoul Middleman

Baltimore native, Raoul Middleman, is the quintessential painter. After receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts, from Johns Hopkins University, he attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Brooklyn Museum Art School, and the Skowhegan Summer School, all on a full scholarship. Since 1961 Raoul has been teaching at The Maryland Institute College of Art. His love of oil painting has taken him to France, Germany, Italy, Scotland, the canyonlands of  Utah, the urban streets of Baltimore, the seacoast of Buzzardʼs Bay, the privacy of his studio, and along the Susquehanna shores. He was President of the National Academy of Design and galleries in New York City, Washington D.C., Richmond, San Francisco,  Philadelphia, Baltimore and Munich have exhibited his work. His connection with Troika Gallery grew out of an artistic friendship with Dorothy Newland, Troika Gallery Founder. Known for his expressive painterly cityscapes, landscapes, still lifes, and portraits, his art is in private and public collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, Baltimore Museum of Art,  Corcoran Gallery of Art, National Academy of Design,  Johns Hopkins Hospital, and the New York Public Library.  He is nationally and internationally collected.

Terry Miller

Graphite artist Terry Miller was an architectural draftsman working in Manhattan, taught emotionally disturbed children for a decade and in 1990 decided to turn professional as a full-time graphite artist. Graduating from art school and traveling extensively, Terry's artistic pursuits are exclusively in various grades of graphite portraying textural contrasts of wood, stone, water, animal hide and other natural elements, to bring depth, dimension, and emotion to his works. As a professional wildlife artist, Terry has garnered significant awards.  Private and corporate collectors, both here and abroad seek out his exquisite work.  The Woodson Art Museum in Wisconsin honored Terry in 2013  by naming him as their 33rd Master Wildlife Artist, and his work was selected and included in Strokes of Genius: The Best of Drawing,  published in 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013 by North Light Books. A new book, Art Journey, Animals: A Collection of Inspiring Contemporary Masterworks, includes three of Terry’s drawings. He relishes his studio time and the opportunity to take his reference sketches and turn them into works of art that capture the joy of life.

Dorothy F. Newland

Dorothy F. Newland attended the Pennsylvania Museum School of Art and the Maryland Institute College of Art.  She studied extensively with Leonard Bahr, Jack Foflygen, Cedric Egeli, and John Howard Sanden and attended workshops by Burton Silverman, Henry Hensche, Raoul Middleman and Daniel Greene. A professional painter,  portraits are her specialty. "I love to paint people. I don't know why I prefer to do portraits, but it seems that each time I do something else, I get itchy to get back to portraits."  Dorothy worked in oil charcoal and pastel from a studio on the Little Choptank River.  With numerous awards to her credit, Dorothy was a sought after painting and drawing teacher.  A member of the Maryland Society of Portrait Painters, The Working Artists Forum and past president of The Chesapeake College Art Advisory Board, she is also co-founder of Troika Gallery along with Laura Era and Jennifer Heyd Wharton.  Dorothy passed away in 2018 after an incredibly productive painting career. She was 97.

Victor Nizovtsev

Victor Nizovtsev and the owners of Troika Gallery met in 1997 when he moved to the United States from Russia to pursue his art career. Taken with his masterful fantasy, landscape, and still life oil paintings he quickly became an icon at Troika Gallery. Victor is a student of rich and diverse experiences, and his inspiration comes from all he sees and touches, from Greek mythology, Russian folklore, childhood memories, great Masters of the past, or the simple routines of daily life. His art is highly symbolic and humbly simple with images of universal appeal. His vibrant textured colors fill the canvas and contrast with the translucent glazes that make the paintings dance with light.  Victor breathes life into each work inviting the viewer into the painting as a separate universe, one filled with boldness, energy, and vibrant hues. Born in 1965 in Central Siberia, Victor grew up in Kotovsk, and at age nine entered  Art School. In the 9th grade, he began to study at Ilia Repin College of Art, then at the prestigious Vera Muhina University for Industrial Arts in St. Petersburg.  Upon graduation, he began painting professionally. In 1997 Victor moved to the United States. He resides in Maryland with his wife and family and has enjoyed a high degree of success, exhibiting in numerous solo and group shows with collectors excited to find and acquire his unique and imaginative paintings.

Brendan O'Neill

Bronze

Sculptor Brendan T. O'Neill works in bronze depicting American historical figures.  His bust of Harriet Tubman was the first bust of an African-American to be displayed in the governor’s residence in Annapolis, MD. “Harriet Tubman is one of the most inspiring Marylanders and greatest Americans we have ever known, and I’m grateful for Brendan O’Neill Sr. donating his talents to share her history with generations to come,” then Governor O’Malley said. “In commemorating the life of Harriet Tubman, we’re ensuring that the healing light of those who shine against the darkness of human frailty will never dim.” Brendan replied, “I am honored to have been involved in this project to pay tribute with my sculpture to such an iconic figure in Maryland and American History.  I wanted to portray Harriet as a young woman in her 30's as she might have looked at the time of the Underground Railroad and to create an image of a powerful yet simple young woman, humble yet watchful, and strong in leading her people.” A graduate of Georgetown University, Brendan has been sculpting in bronze for almost 40 years.  He studied at the Corcoran and took masters workshops with E. Daub, P. Lucchesi, and at Nancy Frankel Studios. His busts of Native Americans, notable citizens, and animals are highly collected. His most recent bust of Harriet Tubman is at the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center.

Sara Linda Poly

Sara Linda Poly grew up in the Philadelphia area, attending classes at the Philadelphia College of Art. Further education includes Montgomery College of Art and Design in Maryland, Northern Virginia Community College, and various studies with local and national artists. She owned an illustration and design business and later worked as the assistant gallery director at the Art League Gallery, in Alexandria, Virginia where she is presently an instructor.  Known for her sweeping skies and light in the landscape, Sara has been the winner of numerous awards in regional, national shows and plein air competitions. She has been published in feature articles in International Artist Magazine and Plein Air Magazine and was the The Grand Prize Winner at Plein Air Easton 2016. Other awards include First Place, International Artist Magazine; Best Maryland Artist 2012, and First Place, Small Paintings at Plein Air Easton 2017. She is a member of The Oil Painters of America, The Washington Society of Landscape Painters, and prestigious The Salmagundi Club in New York City. Sara has spent many years living, traveling and teaching throughout the United States, Europe, and Mexico. She is a sought-after instructor and known for her friendly and professional teaching style. Sara lives on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and is inspired daily by its freshness and clarity of light.

W. Stanley Proctor

Bronze

Native Floridian W. Stanley “Sandy” Proctor has a national reputation as a professional sculptor of the highest caliber. Before concentrating in bronze sculpture, Sandy was an accomplished painter and stone carver whose work has been displayed at museums of national and international recognition. The State of Florida commemorated Sandy and his contribution to the arts as they inducted him into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in March 2006.   He attended Washington and Lee University and is a self-taught artist.  His paintings traveled to shows at the Smithsonian Museum, the British Museum of Natural History, and the Royal Scottish Academy. In 2004 he was selected as the American Artists Professional League Award recipient for the best work best depicting traditional realism.  He has been the Featured Master Sculptor at the Southeastern WildlifeArt Exposition,  the Plantation Wildlife Arts Festival and the Easton Waterfowl Festival. He has installed public and private bronze commissions including the California Veteran’s Memorial Park,  Florida State University, University of Tampa, and the University of South Alabama.  Collectors value Sandy’s figurative sculptures as among the finest examples of life-size sculpture.

Christopher Richard

Clay

Chris Richard is a ceramic and sculpture artist who received a Masters of Fine Arts degree from the Edinboro University of Pennsylvania where he studied the influences of the East on the West in the 19th century with an emphasis on painting, ceramics, and architecture. He studied with renowned potter Hideo Okino at the University of Vermont and received a BFA from Johnson State College.  The New York Times, The Washington Post, Art News, and other publications have written about his ceramics.  His work is in the collections of the Museum of Fine Art in Boston, The Butler Institute of American Art and in many private and corporate collections, including the Willard Hotel in Washington, D.C. Chris Richard's raku and clay work is grounded in a vision of simplicity and understatement. He has shown throughout the country in one person, and group shows and Troika Gallery is proud to highlight his remarkable work.

Julia Rogers

Being an artist and painting nature was inevitable to Waterfowl Festival 2017 Featured Artist, Julia Rogers. Growing up as a child of the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay of Maryland had a strong influence She has an endless desire to paint, and over the years has worked in several mediums, gradually developing a distinctive style. Her discipline includes a wide variety of subjects including plein air, figurative, and portraiture. Julia's extensive travel and reference trips to witness the environment and natural behaviors of animals have influenced her painting. As a Society of Animal Artists board member, she is captivated by wildlife and finds it her favorite subject. Her exhibitions include; Waterfowl Festival; Hiram Blauvelt Museum, “Kalahari to Kilimanjaro”; Society of Animal Artists Juried Show; Leigh Yawkey Woodson, “Birds in Art”; 'Wildlife and Western Art Show; St. Petersburg, FL; 'Safari Club International;'The Briscoe Museum; Gilcrease Museum and the Raymond James Women in the Arts-Artist of the year and speaker. Articles regarding Roger's art have appeared in; Sporting Classic, Wildlife Art News, and Africa Geographic.

Ann Didusch Schuler

Ann Didusch Schuler trained at the Maryland Institute, College of Art in Baltimore, graduating in 1940 and continuing her studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Arts. She returned to MICA for post-graduate where she collaborated and studied under master painter M. Jacques Maroger, and Ann taught extensively. In 1959, Ann and her husband, Hans Carl Schuler,  decided to found a fine arts school and they opened the Schuler School of Fine Arts in Baltimore. Known for her portraits, floral still lifes, and landscapes, her artwork is collected by corporate, educational and financial institutions, hospitals, museums, the Maryland Governor’s Mansion, and private collectors.  Her portraits hang at Johns Hopkins University and Hospital,  Dickinson College,  Maryland State Treasure Department, Maryland National Bank, and other venues throughout America. She was a member of the Grand Central Gallery, NYC, Watercolor Society of Maryland, the Charcoal Club, Founding Member of the Maryland Pastel Society; Charter Member of the National Museum of Women in the Arts,  Member of the Salmagundi Club, NYC; and Troika Gallery.  Ann passed away in 2010. Athough a renown professional artist, she was most content when referred to as  "teacher".

William Storck

Oil

William Storck has been painting full time for over 35 years. He first studied with the master painter Naoto Nakagawa in Vermont and then at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Mr. Storck's first solo show in Annapolis, at the age of 25 sold out completely. He has had successful shows over the years from Florida to Nantucket with his work exhibited in museums across the United States. Bill is a member of the American Society of Marine Artists, and his paintings are in permanent collections as well as hundreds of private collections in the US, the UK, and Europe. Until 2013 Mr. Storck lived on his family's waterfront farm in Annapolis spending countless hours exploring the waterways. His romantic views of the Chesapeake and it's tributaries reflect a lifetime spent studying the light, the wind, and water of the beautiful and ancient Bay. Though known for his luminescent still life paintings, Bill has gained recognition for his marine paintings, drawn from his love of sailing and  observations of traditional Chesapeake-built Schooners and Skipjacks still sailing and working on the Bay.  Storck strives to integrate water, wind, sky, and sailing vessels into a  balanced, light infused, timeless image. Important influences in Mr. Storck's work are marine artists J.M.W. Turner, J. Hamilton, and F. H. Lane. The artist resides in New Hampshire with his wife, Trudy Trumpy.

Carol Lee Thompson

Carol Lee Thompson is a Classical Realist trained in the methods of the Old Masters. She paints a  range of subject matter including animal, landscape, figurative, and Western themes. She is a graduate of Towson State University, holds a Masters of Fine Arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art, and is a graduate of the Schuler School of Fine Arts, where she teaches and has a 30-year affiliation. Carol Lee studied with mentor, and dear friend, the late Ann Didusch Schuler whose traditional atelier training taught her the techniques of the Old Masters. Carol Lee prepares her surfaces with lead and glue, grinds her pigments, and paints with Maroger medium.  She has received  awards from noted art competitions including First Place in the Oil Painters of America and the Salmagundi Club in NYC. She is a member of The Society of Animal Artists, Oil Painters of America, National Oil and Acrylic Painters' Society, American Academy of Equine Art, and Miniature Painters, Sculptors & Gravers Society of Washington, DC.  Her paintings hang in corporate and private collections including The Butler Institute of Art, The Academy Art Museum,  Baltimore's City Hall, Fort McHenry National Shrine,  U.S. State Department, Star Pass Resort and Camden Yards Stadium.

David H. Turner

William H. Turner and David H. Turner, father, and son share a talent for capturing the beauty and motion of wildlife in bronze. Their native land, the Eastern Shore of Virginia, a peninsula surrounded by the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, is rich in wildlife and is a continuous source of inspiration for their work.  Created using the lost wax process,  this method of casting bronze is an ancient craft, at least 5,000 years old. Established in 1983, Turner Sculpture, near Onley, VA serves as the studios, foundry, and gallery, where most of their work is displayed. To date, they have created more than 700 different limited edition bronzes and more than 100 large public commissions throughout America, including, Naples Historical Society, Naples, FL; Quadricentennial Plaza Fountain Sculpture, Jamestown, VA; The Society of the Four Arts, Palm Beach, FL; University of Virginia Children’s Hospital, Charlottesville, VA; Schiffer Publishing Co. Jen  Wagner

Stained Glass Mosaics 

Jennifer Wagner is a professional mosaic artist living in St. Michaels, MD. Her large-scale installations can be found throughout Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Washington, DC and Arlington, Va. She has won multiple installations through highly competitive calls, competing against established artists from around the world. She has been recognized in news publications internationally; her work having gone viral twice. She had the cover of Maryland Life Magazine in March of 2011 and was named the Free State’s Finest Artist of the Upper Shore. Her mosaic mural in Brookland, D.C. was the backdrop for a Presidential press conference in 2021, and her piece for the Zenith Gallery Betty White Unites exhibit in 2022 was featured in news stories around the world: from Ghana, to Australia, to Botswana. She began her career apprenticing with a mosaic artist, but after 3 years turned her attention to the philosophies and techniques of fine art oil painters. This perspective has allowed her to create a unique and recognizable style. She is affiliated with the Troika Gallery in Easton and the Zenith Gallery in Washington, D.C. She has a permanent installation in the Marietta House Museum in Glenn Dale, MD. Her work is collected nationally and internationally.

Jennifer Heyd Wharton

The inspiration for painting comes to Jennifer Heyd Wharton from the relationship between the light and the shadows that play around a subject. "I view my role as a painter to capture the spirit of my subjects, making them come alive. My goal is to evoke an emotional response, creating a connection of delight between the artist and the audience. Whether painting the eyes of a child, the face of an animal or the shapes of a landscape, boat, or building, I hope to bring the glory of God through my art." Within her subjects, she looks for the large interlocking shapes of lights and darks, the dominant color and temperatures that set the stage for the painting. While working in watercolor or oil, she carefully plans the composition, and as she begins to fill the canvas or watercolor paper within she gives the painting its soul by blending edges, heightening and lowering values, and punching or softening color with exquisitely subtle details. Jennifer majored in illustration and photography at the Moore College of Art in Philadelphia and then had a successful career as a package designer, art director, and illustrator. She studied with noted artists; D. Leffel,  J. Lipking,  H. Hacker, S. Lawrence, and L. Morganthaller.  She is a state ambassador and member of The Portrait Society of America and is an illustrator of numerous children's books.  Voted Best Artist, Upper Eastern Shore, by Maryland Life Magazine, her oil and watercolor paintings have won multiple awards, including the Sam Hemming Award from the Academy Art Museum and the Caton Frame Award from the Baltimore Watercolor Society. Art lovers throughout the nation collect her work and commission her excellent portrait work. Jennifer is also co-founder of Troika Gallery along with Laura Era and Dorothy F. Newland.

Stewart White

Watercolor, Egg Tempera 

Stewart White won the Grand Prize in Plein Air Easton in 2009. A member of the American Impressionists Society, the National Watercolor Society, the American Watercolor Society, the President of Mid-Atlantic Plein-Air Painters Association, and past President of The American Society of Architectural Illustrators, Stewart 's background in architectural illustration adds to his skill set and his paintings reflect his knowledge of good design. He studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, served in the US Army, and holds a BFA from UC Berkeley. Stewart works as an architectural illustrator and designer and has won numerous awards and holds frequent workshops in Paris for architects on his techniques for architectural watercolors. Stewart exhibits his paintings in juried and gallery exhibitions throughout America and is frequently requested to judge major art shows.

Chris Wilke

Chris Wilke is an artist based on Maryland’s beautiful Eastern Shore - a setting that continually inspires her with its bountiful farmer's markets, antique shops, and Chesapeake maritime heritage. Her art reflects her passion for the still life.  "When I am struck by an everyday object; something I can find beauty and spirituality in, full of emotion, I am motivated to give it visual expression. If we take the time to observe, to freeze-frame a moment in our lives, we can see that it is gorgeous."  Chris is a colorist, always trying to efficiently create moods and feelings through the interplay between color values and light and shadow. Her artwork explores the juxtaposition of colors so that the subject pops, while her paintings have an impressionist aspect, deriving from her efforts to exclude as much detail and information about the subject as possible. A Wilke painting captures a moment in time that reflects, and evokes, feelings rather than a narrative statement or commentary.  Chris studied intensively and completed artist workshops with a diverse group of accomplished artists, including L.  Escobedo, N. Tankersley, L. Robb, R. Johnson, S. Bielen, K. DeWaard, G. LaRock, and  V. Craig. Chris was the featured artist for the 32nd Fine Arts at Oxford in 2016, a juried exhibition.

Vladislav Yeliseyev

Watercolor

Classically trained American watercolor artist Vladislav Yeliseyev was born in Russia and received his formal art education at The Moscow Institute of Architecture. His unique ability to reflect transparency of natural light in his paintings and to accentuate the artistic qualities of the subject as juxtaposed with the natural environment quickly earned him a high reputation among the leading architects in the country. He has painted thousands of watercolor illustrations for various commercial, residential and government projects. He  won the Formal Presentation Drawing Award from American Society of Architectural Illustrators in 1992 and in  1993, his works were exhibited and he taught at Parsons School of Design. He is the owner of Vladislav Yeliseyev Architectural Illustration Company, NYC,  The Renaissance School of Art in Sarasota, FL. Vlad is a member of American Impressionist Society, National Watercolor Society, and the Florida Watercolor Society.

Matt Zoll

A professional painter and teacher, Matt Zoll studied at the Schuler School with artists Ann Schuler, Will Wilson, and Gerome Atherholt and was taught the techniques of the Flemish Masters. The intense luster and vibrancy of a Matt Zoll painting is a result of his attention to detail which includes hand-grinding powder pigments and the use of a custom Maroger medium.  The Flemish medium, also made in the studio, allows Matt to produce a rich luster and an intense luminosity throughout his work. Zoll applies the techniques of the old masters to his contemporary compositions with a classical flair. Composition, form, value, and lighting are all crucial fundamental elements in a Zoll painting as well as his intense attention to detail. From a very early age, Zoll studied fine art.  Accepted into a gallery at age eighteen his first one-person show was at age twenty, and since then he has sold out numerous shows.  Evoking a mood and drama found in classical realism, his subtle yet dramatic colors are a signature Matt Zoll hallmark and are admired by art collectors far and wide. Matt is the founder of Zoll Studios which offers fine art instruction.
